Blog 16: Optimize Revenue Through Health Club Marketing

One of the things I often see when meeting with health club professionals, health club general managers, and health club owners is that they are overqualified for their own good. Let me explain. Most health club professionals, health club general managers, and health club owners have been in, or around the industry for a very long time. They have seen the way things are done in other health and fitness centers and especially in the health club they aim to emulate, but in the end, they end up just copying everything including the mistakes.

The challenge with this is that most health clubs, health club professionals, health club general managers, and health club owners are basically doing the same thing, the same way. If you analyze (as we do at MMC®www.healthclubmarketingmmc.com) health clubs throughout the world, you will uncover most health clubs are doing about 80% of the same things, the same ways, as that of the rest of the health clubs in the world. The only difference is normally the skill set of the health club professional, health club general manager and/or health club owner who is/are running the operation and their proficiency in a given field.

In most cases, the challenge is coming up with fresh ideas like putting together a health club package or health club membership that is more attractive than that of the past or finding a better way of delivering your message to the community or engaging the community in a way that makes them want to get involved with the health club.

Driving in new traffic is about getting the health club members to see the value of the health club membership or health club package. Are you building the perceived value of your health club product and health club services or are you diminishing the value of your health club product and health club services? Maybe you have enormous value to offer but are not delivering the message properly. Maybe you have tons of traffic but are lacking the professional sales skills to lock up the relationships.

Sometimes, it’s best just to get out of your own way and call in a fresh new set of eyes to take a look at things; have them look at things from the health club member’s perspective and not your perspective. Albert Einstein has been quoted numerous times saying “insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting a different result”.
